This is the text of my essay, "When Fieldwork Becomes Fieldshock," published in Folklore Forum: A Communication for Students of Folklore (Vol. 11, No. 3, Winter 1978), pp. 234-243.
This was part of a special project called "Folklorists in the City: The Urban Field Experience," created and directed by Richard M. Dorson coordinated by Inta Gale Carpenter. Seven of us graduate folklore students -- the "Gary Gang" -- spent weeks in the Calumen region of northwest Indiana, known locally as "da region." Our mission was to explore and document folk traditions of many sorts in that locale.
